Biology : Slender, glabrous annual herb 0,3-3 m tall; stems finely grooved; sometimes slightly aculeate and confused with S. bispinosa except by the fruit.
Ecology : Seasonal pool margins; swamp; weed in cotton fields; irrigated farmland; sometimes in stands; sand banks; coastal dunes; riverine forest margins; sandy soil; 40-1250 m alt.
  Cape Verde Isl.; Yemen.
  Comprises 2 vars.: - Var. leptocarpa; - var. minimiflora (J. B. Gillett) G. P. Lewis (bas.: S. mossambicensis subsp. minimiflora J. B. Gillett).
  Not in Zaire ( = S. microphylla ); not in Ghana (Morton GC 9915 = S. sudanica ).
