Biology : Perennial or annual herb with erect shoots 10- ± 60 cm tall, with frequently ±elongate ascending branches from the base and slender, wiry, angular stems.

Ecology : Damp grassland, marshes, ditches and ponds; river margins; humid sandstone ground; ruderal; frequently weed of rice fields; 0-1200 m alt. (-2100 m in Kenya, once collected).
  Madagascar; tropical America: from Mexico to Argentina, West Indies [subsp. brownei (Planchon) Sastre: Cuba, Jamaica].
