Biology : Saprophytic herb with stem above ground 2,5-15 cm tall, simple or sometimes with 1-flowered side branch, sometimes irregularly papillose, ridged just below flower; rhizome to 4 cm long with spherical clusters of bulbils; leaves ovate, pale brown, c. 2,5-5x1 mm; inflorescence a 1-3-flowered cyme; fruit pale yellow (after flowering, only the placenta-column and the 3 free fertile placenta-tops remain as a globular body beset with brown oblong seeds).
Ecology : Among dead leaves in dense shade on forest floor; evergreen forest; 0-1200 m alt.
  Seems closely related to A. hydra. Material from Malawi previously misidentified as A. winkleri, is A. zambesiaca.
  Not in Nigeria (= A. hydra).
