Biology : Perennial herb; stems very shortly rhizomatous or erect and corm-like, simple or forked, to 1 cm Ø; leaves radical, linear to lanceolate, flowers white or reddish.
Ecology : Still or flowing water to 2 m deep; near sea-level- 400 m in alt.
  Resembling Vallisneria, but leaves not parallel-sided.
  Madagascar; India, E and SE Asia, Japan, Australia [var. echinosperma (C.B. Cl.) C. D. K. Cook & Lüönd]. – Recently established in America.
