Biology : Delicate herb; rhizome elongate, 1(-2) cm , with scales; 'leaves small (blade 2-5 ??1,8-4,5 cm); flowers blue-lilac pink '(rarely white, 4-10 cm ), held c. 5 cm above the water.

Ecology : Small pools in Sphagnum bogs, channels in Papyrus associations; also open water; 1120-1850 m alt. True N. heudelotii does not occur in E Africa. – Botswana.
  Intermediates exist with N. nouchali var. caerulea, especially in Angola and Zambia (= var. nana); the problem of delimitation can only be solved by breeding and crossing experiments.
