Biology : Herbs with large bulbs, strap-shaped basal leaves, a pineapple-like ± dense inflorescence, raceme, on a stout scape and a tuft of bracts (coma) above the flowers; perianth lobes (6) fused together at base; flowers scented, varying from fragrant to offensive; capsule papyraceous, ± 3-winged; seeds round, black. “Taxonomy is rather difficult as the flowers are very similar. The main useful characters are fragrance, plant size and leaf color” (Zonneveld & Duncan, 2010: 100).
