Ecology and distribution
Trop. Afr.
Biology : Habenaria species have hairy underground tubers or thick fleshy roots. The stem is unbranched, the inflorescence terminal. The flowers are relatively small, usually green and/or white.
Ecology : The largest genus of terrestrial orchids with some 600 species. Habenaria (mostly terrestrial) forms an important part of the African orchid flora. It is rivalled in numbers only by the epiphytic Polystachya.
