Trop. Afr.
Biology : Terrestrial small herbs, rarely encountered in nature, “because they appear above the ground, flower and die down within a short space of time” (Stewart & Campbell, Orchids Kenya: 143, 1996).
Ecology : Genus of 50-60 species in tropical Africa, S. Africa (c. 25 species) and one in Arabia (map in Pridgeon & al., Gen. orchid. 2: 315, 2001). A revision is in preparation (Bytebier & al. in P.M. Musili & G. Mwachala, XXI AETFAT Congress 2017: 267). With 1 or 2 small underground tubers, 1 or 2 sessile leaves that lie flat on the ground; flowering stem slender; flowers very small, resupinate, with free sepals, petals larger and more conspicuous than the tiny sepals; lip similar to petals, spurred; “the floral parts are [often] much divided and these [species] with larger flowers are very beautiful” (I. & E. la Croix, Afric. orchids wild & cult.: 355, 1997). One species in our area, viz. H. klimkoana, is incompletely known: tubers lacking, ecology not recorded, and known only from the type gathering.
