Ecology and distribution
Trop. Afr.
Biology : Rhizomatous sympodial herbs with short stems usually swollen at base to form pseudobulbs; inflorescence terminal; sepals and petals dissimilar.
Ecology : Genus of c. 320 species (c. 470 according to Raskoti & Ale in Novon 23: 83, 2014); a pantropical genus (circumscription discussed by Radins & al. (Phytotaxa 175: 121, 2014) with a few representatives in temperate regions, incl. Europe (1 sp.) and N. America (2 spp.; map in Pridgeon & al., Gen. orchid. 4: 469, 2005). Some species are grown as ornamentals and seem easily maintained in cultivation (Stewart & Campbell, Orchids Kenya: 48, 1996).
