Biology : Aquatic herb 50-90 cm tall, annual or perhaps sometimes perennial; stem corm-like or shortly elongate and somewhat rhizomatous; leaves radical, spirodistichous; juvenile leaves submerged, extremely variable; adult leaves emergent; petiole erect, to c. 75 cm long; blade ovate, acuminate, cordate, 7,5-14x5-7,5 cm; flowering stems erect, c. 40-70 cm long; inflorescence a raceme 5-14 cm long; flowers 15-30, with pedicels 6-10 mm long; perianth clear blue or violet, 6-lobed, c. 1,2 cm long; stamens 6; capsule ellipsoid to ovoid, c. 9 mm long.
Ecology : Margins of rice-fields at the foot of earth dams in cleared Bruguiera, Hunteria, Rhizophora, Avicennia mangrove swamp forest; shallow pools; lagoons; temporary pools; 0-? 1000 m alt.
  Collections very few and scattered.
  The plant is able to withstand great changes in water level (fide Cook, l.c.; Fl. Zambes. 13/2: 70, 2010).
