Biology : Annual, ±straggling herb, to 60 cm long; variable habit due to 'light- and water-availability.

Ecology : Upland rain-forest and moor in glades, below cliffs; montane bamboo thicket, evergreen bushland and grassland; usually in the Erica-belt, common in fire-ravaged areas; weed of cultivations; 1300-3400 m alt. Sudan (Imatong Mts.).
  Arabia. Relic of a much more ancient larger distribution of this genus
