Biology : The bulb, spherical, is borne on a compact rhizome formed from old bulb-bases; leaves spirally arranged, blade elliptic to ovate. Scape solid. Flowers without corona, actinomorphic; fruit a berry.

Ecology : Eight species
  Flower heads ornamental. A few species have been in cultivation since centuries, but they are not widely grown in collections. Horticultural hyrbrids are rare.
  tropical and southern Africa; Yemen, Saudi Arabia and possibly Oman
