Ecology and distribution

Biology : In a narrow circumscription [Speta in Phyton (Horn) 38: 121-123, 1998, and Speta in Kubitzki, Fam. & genera vascul. pl., monocot., Lilianae…: 283-284, 1998] a genus of 30 species distributed in Europe-Siberia, Asia (Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, N India). Not present in Tropical Africa where other genera occur, i.e. Drimiopsis, Ledebouria, Merwilla, Schizocarphus. The characters delimiting Scilla from Ledebouria are: leaves not spotted, inflorescence mostly solitary and ± rigid, flowers blue to white, ovary sessile, seeds globose and coloured yellow, brown or black.
