Ecology : Introduced from the Caribbean-tropical S. America, is cultivated in Zaire and elsewhere in southern Africa, also naturalised in fields and fallows (Lejoly & al., Flore Tshopo in Taxonom. 24: 37, 2008. Plants escaped from cultivation assumed to be native were described from S. Africa, Natal, in 1877 by Regel under a new genus, Keitia, and as Keitia natalensis (Acta Hort. Petrop. 5: 640).
