Ecology : Forest and forest-grassland transition; often in wet places; margins of cultivated land; villages; 0-2600 m alt. Cultivated for food (Ceylon spinach) and purple dye (fruits).
  S. Tomé; tropical Asia; West Indies; probably native to Old World Tropics (Africa?).
