Biology : Weak trailing or ascending perennial herb, glabrous, 11-100 cm tall; stems hollow, rooting at lower nodes, finely striate, fleshy, 0,3-1,6 cm Ø.

Ecology : Marshy soil near permanent water; along streams; ± 1500-2500 m alt.
  Extremely variable. Reduron (l.c.) recognizes 2 varieties.
  Atlantic Isl.; N Africa incl. Egypt; C & S Europe; SW & C Asia. Naturalized in the New World.
