Biology : Perennial erect herb 15-60-80 cm tall with a fleshy rootstock; stems robust, glabrous, furrowed; leaves in basal rosette simple, oblanceolate, c. 17 cm long, finely dentate, spiny; cauline leaves sessile, ± lobed, spiny.

Ecology : Native of tropical and subtropical America. Naturalised in waste places, streamsides, etc. in W Africa from Sierra Leone to W Cameroons, Uganda, islands of the Gulf of Guinea.
