Biology : Perennial herb, suckering to form dense groups of plants, acaulescent; leaves in a dense rosette, erect-spreading but curving inwards in the dry season

Ecology : Montane and watershed grassland, Brachystegia woodland, on rock outcrops; 800-2300 m alt.
  Variable in colour of leaves and shape of racemes; populations from Tanzania - Zambia tend to have spotted leaves and capitate racemes; those from near the type locality in Malawi have ± unspotted leaves and more cylindrical racemes.
