Ecology and distribution

Biology : Terrestrial “beautiful” herb 30-85 cm tall; tubers ± ellipsoid, 1,5-3,5x0,7-1,5 cm, sometimes forked; sterile stem short, covered by overlapping red-spotted sheaths below and with 1-3 leaves at apex, narrowly elliptic, acute, 12-35x1-1,5 cm; flowering stem leafy, leaves 6-15, lanceolate, 7-31x1-3,5 cm; inflorescence dense, cylindrical, 6-25 cm long, 2-3 cm Ø, 16-70-flowered; flowers small, 10-12 mm Ø, facing down, pale pinkish to deep purple; bracts lanceolate, 10-30 mm long; pedicel and ovary 10 mm long; dorsal sepal hood-like, 5-10-13x4-6-8 mm, with crozia-like hook at tip, with spur 6-13 mm long, wide-mouthed, then sharply decurved; lateral sepals oblong-elliptic, 5-7x2,5-4 mm, spreading downwards; petals obovate, 4-6x1,5-2,5 mm, apiculate, erect, inside hood; lip linear to spathulate, 4-6x1-1,5 mm, projecting forwards or deflexed.
Ecology : Seasonally wet grassland, often by rivers; swamp; (moist) dambo; (grass) bog; wet marshy soil; sometimes forming large colonies; 950-2500-2750 m alt.
  Flower colour very variable. Sometimes including D. perplexa (See Fischer & al., Orchids Rwanda: 184, 2010).
  Tubers in demand for food and/or medicine.
  S. Africa. In Niger ? (not in Peyre de Fabrègues & Lebrun, Cat. pl. vascul. Niger, 1976).
