Ecology and distribution

Biology : Beautiful terrestrial slender herb 20-60 cm tall, leafless at anthesis but with a tuft of old leaves at stem base; tubers ellipsoid, 7x3 cm; leaves 3-6 on sterile stem, filiform, grass-like, stiff, 30x0,1 cm, developing after anthesis; flowering stem with sheath-like leaves only; inflorescence 6-12 cm long, 3-6 cm Ø, laxly 2-14-flowered; flowers deep blue, rarely white, 2-4 cm Ø; bracts 6-20 mm long; pedicel and ovary 10-15 mm long; dorsal sepal hood-like, 16-20x6-12 mm, 5-10 mm deep, with upcurved cylindrical spur 5-8 mm long; lateral sepals deflexed, oblong, acuminate, 10-2x5-9 mm; petals inside hood, spanner-shaped, 8-15x3-4 mm, with a basal lobe, then narrowed at middle, then expanded with 2-lobed tip; lip projecting, elliptical-orbicular, 10-25x10-20 mm, margins deeply fringed.
Ecology : (Short) grassland in well-drained areas, or with scattered shrubs; roadside cuttings in gravelly soil; in grass often burnt in the dry season; flowering after the first rains; (1000-)1800-2700 m alt.
  Very variable in several characters over the whole distribution area; it may be possible to distinguish geographical variants.
  Olzewski & Szlachetko in Polish Bot. J. 48: 117, 2003, give D. longilabris Schltr./Herschelia longilabris (Schltr.) Rolfe as synonyms. According to Cribb & Leedal, o.c.: 203, the latter is “a close ally”, treated by us below as a distinct species.
  E S. Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland. Perhaps also in Katanga (Zaire).
