Biology : Terrestrial slender herb 15-80 cm tall, densely minutely pubescent in all parts; tubers ellipsoid, c. 1 cm Ø, densely woolly; stem very leafy; leaves up to 40, lanceolate, acute, 2-6x1-2,5 cm, the largest at middle of stem; inflorescence 4-35 cm long, 2,5-3,5-6 cm Ø, densely -40-50-flowered; bracts leafy, ovate-lanceolate, to 2,5 cm long; pedicel and ovary very slender, 1-2,5 cm long; flowers in various shades of pink and purple, rarely white, often with yellow or orange centre; sepals elliptic, 4,5-8x2-5 mm; petals obliquely ovate, 4-7x1,5-4 mm; lip 5-10 mm long, 6-14 mm wide, with a knee-like bend, base narrow, widest at apex, fan-shaped, purple-spotted, 3-lobed, mid-lobe small; spur sac-like, 2-3 mm long.
Ecology : Brachystegia open woodland, semi-open places in Combretum-Terminalia woodland; edges of dambos, dambos; sometimes in semi-wet places, swampy areas, marshy grassland; dry places in bush; (short-grassed) lava plains; in thicket grass on alluvium; on very deep red soil; 80-2700 m alt.
  Variable in floral characters, in the leafiness of the stem, in size and shape of leaves, in degree of pubescence.
  B. mixta was considered as a synonym by Geerinck (Fl. Afr. Centr., l.c.).
  NE-E S. Africa, Swaziland. – The most widely distributed species in the genus.
