Biology : Terrestrial slender glabrous herb 20-70 cm; stem delicate, leafy; tubers ovoid, 1-3,5 cm long; leaves 12-28, lanceolate, acute, 3-8x0,7-1,5 cm; inflorescence 4,5-16 cm long, densely 8-30-flowered; bracts leaf-like, ovate-lanceolate, to 3 cm long; pedicel and ovary 6-13 mm long; flowers purple or violet, often with darker spots or whitish portions; sepals green-tipped, elliptic-oblong ovate, 5-10x2,3-5 mm; petals oblong, 5-9,5x2,3-3,7 mm; lip 5-10 mm long, 3-7 mm wide, broadest at base, apex narrow and tongue-shaped, 3-lobed near half-way, with a fleshy raised mid-lobe and thin wing-like side lobes; spur 5-10 mm long, curved, obtuse.
Ecology : Grassland; Protea savanna; long-grass woodland; cleared woodland; grassy swamp, marsh, dambo margins, edges of shallow vleis; gallery forest; in damp ground by small stream among tall grass; drier areas in boggy grassland on sandy soil; open grassland on clay soil; ? 300-800-1800 m alt.
  Variable in shape of lip. A widely distributed species with many variations.
  NE-E S. Africa.
