Biology : Terrestrial robust herb 18-90 cm tall; tubers cylindrical, to 10 cm long, 1 cm Ø; cauline leaves numerous, lanceolate, acuminate, c. 7,5x3 cm; inflorescence to 28 cm long, 3-5 cm Ø, densely many-flowered; pedicel and ovary 1-2 cm long; bracts leaf-like, to 3,4x0,5 cm; flowers pink-purple, spotted, inner parts whitish; sepals elliptic, rounded, 5-7x2,3,5 mm; petals obliquely ligulate, 4-7,5x1,5-3 mm; lip 8-12 mm long, 3-lobed apically, mid-lobe the longest; spur rounded, 2-3,5 mm long.
Ecology : Brachystegia woodland; burnt grassland on heavy clay soil; seepage areas at foot of slopes; dambo, wet grassland; edges of vleis; river banks; on (deep red) clay or sandy soil; 1000-1500 m alt.
