Ecology and distribution

Biology : Epiphytic or lithophytic ± succulent herb, 18-50 cm tall, glabrous, erect or pendulous, forming large clumps; roots long, branched, stout, 0,5-1 cm wide, produced freely along stem; stem woody, to 50 cm long, simple, rarely branched, leafy above, clothed in old leaf sheaths below; leaves in 4-8 pairs, ligulate, stiffly erect, fleshy, often arcuate, rigid, coriaceous, conduplicate, articulated at a sheathing base, 15-30x1,5-3,5 cm, apex retuse to unequally bilobed with a mucro in the sinus; inflorescences in leaf axils, erect, racemose, corymbose or shortly paniculate, 3-20 cm long, few- to many-flowered, often rather dense; flowers sweetly scented, creamy yellow (lip white) with transverse reddish brown stripes and spots, 0,8-1,4 cm long; perianth thickly fleshy, curved, forming a cup.
Ecology : On trees or rocks in deciduous (coastal) bushland and woodland with Acacia, Combretum, Adansonia; sometimes in association with Ansellia gigantea var. nilotica; rocks, sea cliffs; mostly in semi-arid areas; sometimes in riverine forest; 0-1000 m alt.
  Related to A. praemorsa (Roxb.) Blatter & McCann (C and S India, Sri Lanka). Treated as a distinct species by Pridgeon 2014.
