Ecology and distribution
Trop. Afr.
Biology : Epiphytic plant; stem 3-6,5 cm long; roots numerous, rarely branched, to 35 cm long, silvery grey, undulating and twisting, often loosely attached to host; inflorescences 5-10 per plant, 2-9 cm long, 8-15-flowered; flowers c. 1 cm Ø, white, spur dull orange, ± scented; bracts ovate, sheathing, 2 mm long, with a hook-like process on rachis opposite flowers; pedicel and ovary 3+2 mm long; sepals and petals ovate-acute, 2,5x1 mm; lip pandurate-obovate, with a thickening on either side of the mouth of the spur, apex folded; spur 2-3 mm long, conical, incurved.
Ecology : Open woodland, Brachystegia woodland; riverine woodland; patches of bush; margins of evergreen forest; relict rain-forest; coastal bushland; secondary regrowth; plantations, epiphyte on exotic trees, e.g., Cupressus lusitanica; gardens, on orange trees; occasionally riverine forest; on Albizia zygia, Euphorbia ampliphylla; on main branches and on small branches and twigs; 0-2300 m alt.
Often confused with M. stolzii which has much denser inflorescences and bracts not sheathing. M. globulosa occurs in drier areas (not very dry !) than M. stolzii. “These plants [M. globulosa] experience a long dry season of 6-7 months [Zimbabwe] which then survive due to high humidity levels during the night” (Fibeck & Phiri, 1998: 80).
In Kenya occurring only W of Rift Valley
