Ecology and distribution
Trop. Afr.
Biology : Terrestrial, rarely epiphytic herb 10-50 cm tall, glandular-pubescent; tubers globose-ovoid, 0,5-1,2x1-1,5 cm, woolly; basal leaves (1-)2, spreading, lanceolate-oblong, 2,5-13x1-5 cm, glabrous, glossy grey-green; stem 10-27 cm long, erect; inflorescence ± lax, pubescent, 8-24 cm long, 10-40-flowered; flowers white to pink, lip purple-spotted; bracts insignificant; dorsal sepal ovate, 2-5,5x1-4 mm, laterals spreading, obliquely ovate, 4-9x3-6 mm; petals ovate, smaller; lip 5-lobed, 5-9,5 mm long, 3-7 mm wide, lowest 2 lobes tooth-like, the other 3 lobes oblong, subacute, mid-lobe the longest; spur 2-12 mm long, parallel to ovary.
Ecology : Woodland; high-rainfall Brachystegia woodland; common under Brachystegia spiciformis; moist open Brachystegia slopes; sometimes evergreen forest towards edge; forest-grassland transition; amongst damp grass near streams; open soil on road-cuts; in leaf litter in deeply shaded wet woodland; forest verges; mossy floor in rain-forest; (pine) plantations; epiphyte on moss-covered branches of trees or at base of trunks; ericaceous shrub; forming large colonies, carpeting woodland floor; 600-2400 m alt.
On the Zomba Plateau, Malawi, the plant has colonised pine plantations and is growing and flowering at the same time as Cynorkis kassneriana, C. buchananii. It seems possible that some introgression has occurred here (Fl. Zambes. 11/1: 55, 1995).
  Bioko/Fernando Poo (Fragm. Florist. Geobot. 43/1: 24, 1998), S. Tomé (Acta Bot. Gall. 147: 170, 2000; Bothalia 41: 64, 2011).
