Biology : Epiphytic, rarely terrestrial, herb; pseudobulbs 3-7 cm apart, 2-leaved, ellipsoid, 3-6x1-2 cm, 4-5-angled; leaves lanceolate, 9-20x1,5-3 cm, thick; inflorescence arching, 7-22 cm long, 18-50-flowered; peduncle 4-13 cm long; rachis flattened, blade-like, 4-angled in section, 3,5-11 cm long, pale green spotted with purple; bracts recurved, concave, ovate, 7-12x7-12 mm, dark purple, concealing the flowers; flowers distichous, borne on the 2 concave sides of rachis, not fully open, yellow green, marked with red; sepals ovate, 3-4x2-3 mm; petals not recurved, linear-lanceolate, 2x0,5 mm, keeled; lip ovate, 1,5-2x1-1,5 mm, thick, apex reflexed.
Ecology : Rain-forest; semideciduous forest; relict forest in savanna; oil palm plantation; lava flow; 0-600 m alt.
  Very close to B. lupulinum.
  “The showy part…is the purple bracts arranged along either side of the rachis like ears of wheat and persisting for months, after the flowers have faded” (I. & E. la Croix, o.c.: 173).
