Biology : Epiphytic or lithophytic herb; pseudobulbs 1-13 cm apart, 2-leaved, ovoid, 1-4,5x0,4-1 cm, 4-angled; leaves elliptic or oblong, 1,5-10x0,7-1,5 cm; inflorescence erect, 4-12 cm long, 6-20-flowered; peduncle 3-6 cm long; rachis 1-7 cm long; bracts triangular, 1,5-6x1,5-4 mm; flowers distichous, borne sunk in shallow channels on opposing sides, yellow, greenish to orange brown, or dark red, all open at the same time; sepals ovate, 2-5x1-3 mm; petals linear, 1-3x0,2-0,7 mm; lip elliptic, 1-3x0,5-1,4 mm, fleshy, distinctly 3-lobed at base, side lobes small (var. fuscum) or entire (var. melinostachyum).
Ecology : High evergreen forest; secondary forest with Lophira alata; gallery forest; Brachystegia woodland; on trunks and (high) branches of trees, on e.g., Dacryodes edulis; lava blocks; lichen-covered rocks; 0-2100 m alt.
  Marshall & Hawthorne in their Checklist north. Nimba County, Liberia, 2013: 441, treat B. fuscum var. fuscum as a synonym of B. acutibracteatum var. rubrobrunneopapillosum.
  Easily cultivated. First introduced in England from Sierra Leone by G. Loddiges at Hackney/London, described by Lindley in 1839. Leaves and pseudobulbs are used, pounded and infused as a remedy for heart complaints in Malawi (Morris in Orchid Rev. 1253: 274, 2003).
  Bioko/Fernando Poo. Also in Rwanda ?
  Comprises 2 vars.: - var. fuscum in W Africa to Angola; - var. melinostachyum (Schltr.) J. J. Verm. (bas.: B. melinostachyum Schltr.), also in E Africa. According to I. & E. la Croix, l.c., the differences between the two varieties are small and of little significance.
