Biology : Terrestrial herb 20-50 cm tall, leafy; tubers ± ovoid, 1-2x0,7-1,8 cm; leaves cauline, 7-12, spread, the largest at mid-stem, lanceolate, 3-13x0,8-2,8 cm, bases enclosing stem; inflorescence 3-21 cm long, laxly few-20-flowered; flowers facing downwards, (yellowish) green, with a sickly scent; bracts 10-27 mm long; pedicel and ovary 10-20 mm long, arched; dorsal sepal erect, ovate, 5-11x3-6 mm; laterals deflexed, lanceolate, 5-15x3-5 mm; petals 2-lobed from near base, lobes linear; upper lobe erect, 3-10 mm long, adnate to dorsal sepal; lower lobe spreading sideways and curving up, 3-10 mm long; lip 3-lobed from near base, lobes linear; midlobe pendent, 5-12 mm long; side lobes curving up like lower petal lobes, 5-12 mm long; spur 8-20 mm long, parallel to ovary, apex swollen.
Ecology : (Brachystegia) woodland; grassland; open scrub; occasionally dambo; on steep slopes; 600-2440 m alt.
  Very variable in size (synonyms given correspond to such variants). However, H. silvatica and H. supplicans were kept separate in Fl. Zambes., “but it is possible that they also belong here. Detailed studies are necessary”.
  ? Also in Burundi (Geerinck in Taxonom. 9: 7, 2003, as H. tenuifolia).
