Biology : Terrestrial herb 20-65 cm tall, glabrous; tubers ovoid, 2-4x1-2 cm; basal leaves 2, unequal, appressed to ground, fleshy, ovate-reniform, the larger 4-6,5x4,5-9 cm; cauline leaves 5-10, bract-like, spread, to 5 cm long; inflorescence 7-19 cm long, 7-21-flowered; flowers pale green, centre white, strongly fragrant; bracts similar to stem leaves, 17-27 mm long; pedicel 9-12 mm long, ovary 12-20 mm with 6 toothed keels; dorsal sepal erect, ovate, 8-16x4-8 mm, convex, with 3 toothed keels on outside (on main veins); laterals deflexed, obliquely lanceolate-acuminate, 9-18x3-6 mm, apex sometimes hooked; petals 2-lobed from ± base, lobes linear; upper lobe erect, curved, 9-19 mm long, lower lobe curved upwards, horn-like, 14-25 mm long; lip 3-lobed from ± base, lobes linear, fleshy; midlobe 9-19 mm long, side lobes slightly shorter, narrower; spur 14-23 mm long, parallel to ovary, apex much swollen.
Ecology : Dambo, dambo margins; open grassland; Brachystegia woodland with scattered trees; 1000-2220 m alt.
  Habenaria mosambicensis seems very similar.
