Biology : Terrestrial herb 20-60(-90) cm tall; tubers 2, ± ovoid, 1-2,5x c. 1 cm; leaves cauline, 3-4(-15), linear-lanceolate, the largest (mid-stem) 4-15x0,3-1,5 cm, uppermost bract-like; inflorescence 10-24 cm long, ± lax, 4-15-40-flowered; flowers resupinate, green and white (centre), smelling very unpleasant; bracts 12-20 mm long, glandular, often brown-tipped; pedicel and ovary 15-25 mm long, glabrous; dorsal sepal reflexed, oblong-obovate, cochleate, 4-5x c. 2 mm; laterals falcate-obovate, 6x3 mm; petals 2-lobed from base, lobes linear, papillose; upper lobe erect, 5 mm long; lower lobe pendent, c. 7 mm long, margins ciliate near base; lip 3-lobed from near base, thick, lobes linear; midlobe 8 mm long, side lobes 5 mm; spur 8-20 mm long, pendent, basal part cylindrical, apical part inflated, not twisted, “usually tucked into bracts”.
Ecology : Grassland; swamps; seepage slopes; wet soil overlying rocks; 1500-2650 m alt.
  Similar to H. ndiana but usually smaller and more slender.
  In Zimbabwe collected mixed with H. schimperiana. Not figuring in F. Trop. E. Afr., Orchid. 1, 1968, but specimens are known from S Tanzania (fide Fl. Zambes, 11/1: 99, 1995)
