Biology : Terrestrial herb 20-65 cm tall, glabrous; tuber 1, ± ovoid, 2-5x1-2 cm; basal leaves 2, appressed to ground, suborbicular, 2,5-9,5x2-5 cm; stem with 3-9 appressed sheaths 6-7x2-5 cm; inflorescence to 16 cm long, laxly 1-11-flowered; flowers suberect, white or cream, sepals green outside, with a strong scent of carnations (Dianthus); bracts leafy, lanceolate, 20-40 mm long; pedicel 20-30 mm long, ovary 20 mm; dorsal sepal erect, ovate, very convex, 8-13x5-11 mm; laterals reflexed, ovate, slightly rolled up lengthwise, 9-16x4-7 mm; petals 2-lobed from near base; upper lobe erect, lanceolate, 8-13x4-7 mm, ± adnate to dorsal sepal; lower lobe spreading, oblanceolate, 10-20x3-6 mm; lip 3-lobed from near base, lobes oblanceolate; midlobe 11-21x3-7 mm; side lobes diverging, 9-23x3-8 mm; spur slender, 90-170 mm long, usually enclosed in the bracts.
Ecology : Grassland; Brachystegia woodland on stony soil; Combretum bush; bush with scattered trees; dense savanna woodland at edge of wide flood plain; lateritic hardpans; 425-2600 m alt.
  Occurs in Burundi according to Geerinck in Taxonom. 9: 7, 2003 (& Belg. J. Bot. 126:258, 1994 (Burundi)). Not known in Ethiopia according to Sebsebe Demissew & al., Field guide Eth. orchids: 115, 2004. Not cited for Sudan-S. Sudan by Darbyshire & al., Pl. Sudan & S. Sudan, 2015. The species “may be seen in its thousands on the high moorlands of the Kitulo Plateau [Tanzania] in early February” (Cribb & Leedal, Mount. flow. south. Tanzan.: 213, 1982). Differs from Habenaria vaginata by its larger flowers with 2-lobed petals.
