Ecology and distribution

Biology : Terrestrial herb, stout, 40-130 cm tall; roots several, fleshy, clustered, cylindrical, each to 9x1 cm; leaves cauline, 8-15, spread, mid-ones lanceolate, 4-23x2-7,5 cm, clasping the stem, upper ones bract-like; inflorescence 11-40 cm long, densely many-flowered; flowers resupinate, white, short-lived, soon aging brown, scented; bracts lanceolate, 15-20 mm long; pedicel and ovary arching, 15-20 mm long; dorsal sepal reflexed, convex, ovate, 6x3-5 mm; laterals deflexed, ovate, 5-10x2-4 mm, often twisted; petals entire, erect, ovate-triangular, 5-10x3-5 mm, forming a hood; lip entire or slightly toothed at base, strap-shaped, 6-13x2 mm; spur pendent, slender, 30-65-80 mm long.
Ecology : Damp or swampy grassland; grassy swamps; marshes; dambos; savanna; forest gallery; 550-2700 m alt.
  Differs from H. epipactidea by its entire lip and longer spur. Usually local, and plentiful where it occurs.
