Biology : Terrestrial herb 17-60 cm tall; with a chain of subterranean ± conical pseudobulbs 2-3x2-2,5 cm; leaves absent or starting to develop at anthesis, c. 5, linear-lanceolate, 10-70x0,7-2 cm, not folded, in a fan; inflorescence laxly 5-25-flowered; peduncle with 2-3 sheaths; rachis ± zigzag; flowers spreading, sepals brown, petals and lip white to yellow, veined red to brown; bracts lanceolate-acuminate, 4-11 mm long; pedicel and ovary 13-20 mm long; sepals spreading, oblong-elliptic, 4-8x1,5-4 mm; petals similar, 5-10x4-8 mm; lip 6-10 mm long and wide, 3-lobed; side lobes short, triangular; mid-lobe elliptic, forming 2/3 of lip, subcircular, convex, with a callus of 3-5-7 fleshy verrucose ridges; spur conical, 3-5 mm long; fruit pendent, 20-25 mm long.
Ecology : (Upland) grassland regularly burnt; coastal grassland; usually on sandy soil; scrub; dry miombo; mixed deciduous woodland incl. Combretum bush; humid savanna; swamps; dambo; 0-2800 m alt.
