Biology : Terrestrial summer-growing, clump-forming herb 30-100 m tall; tubers subterranean, moniliform, forming chains (of up to 8 pseudobulbs); leaves 3-4, sword-shaped, 30-100x1,5cm, acuminate, folded, supported by 2 clasping cauline sheaths at base; inflorescence peduncle 30-100 cm long with 3-5 prominent sheaths, arising laterally to leaf-bearing axis; raceme head-like, 6-30-flowered; flowers bright yellow, not opening wide; bracts linear-lanceolate, 10-15x1-2 mm; pedicel and ovary 12-15 mm long; sepals narrowly oblong, 13-25x4 mm; petals similar, 12-20x3 mm; lip 15 mm long, 3-lobed near middle, with 2 broad ridges in basal half, passing into dense slender papillae all over mid-lobe; side lobes oblong, 3-4x3-4 mm; mid-lobe oblong; spur cylindrical, slender, 4-7 mm long; fruit obovoid, 25 mm long, ± erect.
Ecology : Grassland; coastal bush; roadsides.
  Note: According to Duncan & Condy, o.c.: 3, E. oblonga Rolfe was based on a mixed gathering: the flower of E. ensata, vegetative parts of E. ovalis. Often misidentified as E. welwitschii.
  Pollinated by beetles (Peter in Orchids S. Afr. 34: 88-89, 2003; Peter & Johnson, 2009: l.c.; idem in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 171: 720, 2013).
