Biology : Terrestrial herb 10-50 cm tall, attractive; pseudobulbs onion-shaped, conical, 1,5-4x1-2 cm, forming a chain, partly above ground; leaves not fully developed at anthesis, ± 3, bright green, folded, ovate-elliptic, 7-14x2,5-6 cm; inflorescence laxly 9-30-flowered; peduncle 10-27 cm long; rachis 7-16 cm long; bracts lanceolate, 4-12 mm long; pedicel and ovary arched, 8-12 mm long; flowers nodding, sepals green or purple-brown, petals and lip yellow veined purple; sepals spreading, sometimes twisted, obovate, obtuse, 5-15x4-5 mm; petals spreading, suborbicular, 5-10x5-10 mm, ± overlying column; lip erect, 9-16x5,5-11,5 mm, 3-lobed; side lobes erect; mid-lobe bent down at right angle, the tip bent up again nearly touching column, elliptic-triangular with callus of 5 fleshy ridges; spur only a conical projection of base of lip, saccate, with a transverse lacerate flap of tissue in front of it.
Ecology : Brachystegia or mixed woodland; occasionally in rocky grassland; on poor stony soil, often on slopes; thicket-grown plains in places once cultivated, now abandoned (Welwitsch, Angola); persisting in gum plantations; 700-2110 m alt.
  Closely allied to E. gonychila; further studies needed to determine the relationships between them.
