Terrestrial herb 45-60(-100) cm tall; pseudobulbs mostly above ground, cylindrical-conical, 7-14x1,5-2 cm; leaves 4-5, leathery, linear, 20-30x1-1,5 cm, margins minutely serrate; inflorescence laxly 3-24-flowered; flowers yellowish-green tinged purple; sepals ± oblanceolate, 13-20x2-3 mm, spreading, tips curled back; petals lanceolate, 13-20x4 mm; lip 16-20 mm long, obscurely 3-lobed, with crests formed of 3 double rows of dense long papillae, white; side lobes rounded, tapering into mid-lobe; mid-lobe triangular, 5-7x3-4 mm, edges crisped; spur cylindrical, 3-5 mm long, bent forwards; fruit pendent, 40 mm long on pedicel 15 mm long. – “Tufted very pineapple-like colony. The distichous, divergent pale green leaves with acute apices and serrated margins apparently die right down in Winter leaving the pseudobulbs almost concealed by sand” (Ball, 2009: 36). |

In flower “easily identifiable by the papillae near the apex of the column” (I. & E. la Croix, 1997: l.c.). When not in flower resembling E. petersii. “Leaves have an unpleasant succulent scent when crushed, like aloes or sisal” (Ball, l.c.). |
