Biology : Terrestrial herb 20-35 cm tall, attractive; tubers subterranean, potato-like, 2-2,5x1,6-2 cm, in a chain; leaves 1-3, produced after anthesis, grass-like, ribbed, folded, 12-32x0,2-0,8 cm; inflorescence 20-47 cm tall, dense, 4-12-flowered; peduncle with 3-5 brown sheaths; flowers large, white to pinkish with a dark purple blotch on lip; bracts spreading, lanceolate, 10-25 mm long; pedicel and ovary horizontal, 9-21 mm long; sepals (oblong-)elliptic, keeled, projecting forwards, 19-30x5-9 mm; petals similar, 18-25x7-10 mm; lip 16-25x10-19 mm, 3-lobed in middle, with 2 fleshy crests in basal half turning into papillae on mid-lobe; side lobes erect, 17x17 mm; mid-lobe transversely elliptic, 10-12x15 mm; spur horizontal, obtuse, 2-4 mm long; fruit pendent, c. 25 mm long.
Ecology : Deciduous woodland, Brachystegia woodland, woodland margins; edges of wet grassland; on rocky outcrops; 850-1650 m alt.
