Biology : Terrestrial herb 12-25 cm tall; pseudobulbs partly above ground, conical, erect, 2,5-5x0,6-1,5 cm, covered in brown sheaths; leaves 2-9 in a fan, linear, grass-like, 1-8x0,4 cm, partly developed at anthesis; inflorescence laxly 2-9-flowered; flowers variable in colour, purple-brown (sepals), yellow (petals, lip), purple-veined (petals, lip); bracts lanceolate, 5-9 mm long; pedicel and ovary 6-14 mm long; sepals ± spreading, tips curled back, linear-oblanceolate, 8-12x2-2,5 mm; petals oblong-lanceolate, 6-9x3 mm, lying over column; lip 7-14 mm long, 4-5 mm wide, 3-lobed in apical 1/3; side lobes erect, small; mid-lobe elliptic; callus of 3-5 basal ridges turning to long papillae on mid-lobe; spur 4-6 mm long, cylindrical, parallel to ovary; fruit pendent, 18-22 mm long.
Ecology : Brachystegia and miombo woodland; grassland; often on dry rocky hillsides; on poor rocky and shaly soils; under shade; 750-1600 m alt.
  Variable in shape and colour of flower lip, in colour of petals; different colour forms may occur in one colony (Fl. Zambes.: l.c.).
  Disjunct distribution area (Summerhayes in Kew Bull. 12: 125, 1957).
  Not in Fl. Cameroun 35, 2001.
