Biology : Terrestrial slender herb 20-40 cm tall; pseudobulbs subterranean, ovoid-spherical-fusiform, 1,5-3x1,5-2,5 cm; leaves 4-5, basal 3 sheathing, grass-like, erect, linear, 20-40x < 0,5 cm; inflorescence to 12-flowered, rachis 2-7 cm long; flowers ± pendent, not opening widely, dull purple or maroon, spur greenish; bracts reflexed, linear-acuminate, 10-20 mm long; pedicel and ovary 10-14 mm long; sepals ± lanceolate, 14-20x2,5-4,5 mm; petals lanceolate, 12-15x4 mm; lip c. 12 mm long, 8-12 mm wide, 3-lobed, with 2 lamellae running from base to centre of mid-lobe; side lobes erect; mid-lobe ± orbicular, c. 7x6 mm, edge undulate; spur cylindric-clavate, 1-2 mm long; fruit pendent, 12 mm long.
Ecology : Mixed Brachystegia-mopane woodland; high-rainfall and dryer plateau or mountain slope miombo; grassland; 550-1800 m alt.
  Very variable in flower colour.
