Biology : Terrestrial (sometimes lithophytic) herb 60-200 cm tall; pseudobulbs aerial, cylindrical-conical with 5-10 nodes, swollen at base, 16-25x1-1,5 cm, “not unlike a fossil Calamites in shape and appearance” (cited from Welwitsch in Fl. Trop. Afr., l.c.); leaves 4-12, ovate or lanceolate, 15-50x1,5-5 cm, acuminate, folded, developing after anthesis; inflorescence laxly 15->30-flowered; peduncle stout with several sheaths; rachis 10-38 cm long; bracts ovate-lanceolate 15-35 mm long, spreading; flowers ± nodding, greenish, lip with pink or purple marks; pedicel and ovary 17-35 mm long; tepals lanceolate-acuminate; sepals 18-24x3-5,5 mm; petals 15-18x3-5 mm; lip 13-20x7,5-10 mm, 3-lobed, finely papillose near base; side lobes small, triangular; mid-lobe elliptic, c. 8x7 mm, edges undulate, with 2-3 ridges; spur ± clavate, 5-9 mm long, slightly decurved; fruit pendent, 23-30 mm long.
Ecology : Evergreen or semi-deciduous rain-forest; dense forest with Uapaca guineensis, Harungana madagascariensis, Maesopsis eminii, etc.; shrubby low montane forest; secondary forests; often at foot of bamboos; cocoa plantations; riverine forest; inselbergs; fallow land; at the roots of shrubs in very dense primitive woods near streams; on red-brown sandy loam over ironstone; ferruginous rocks; in deep shade, under trees; growing with, e.g., Habenaria procera, Solenangis scandens, Liparis nervosa; sometimes in large populations; 170-1300 m alt.
  Differs from E. guineensis by its green and white flowers and much shorter spur.
