Ecology and distribution

Biology : Terrestrial herb 30-90 cm tall; pseudobulbs subterranean, fleshy, lobed, in a chain; leaves 2-3, folded, linear-lanceolate, long petiolate (15-30 cm long), enclosed in sheaths towards base, blade 23-40x2-3 cm; inflorescence peduncle 30-60 cm long, covered in scarious sheaths; rachis 3-6 cm long, with many closely set flowers in a globular-ovoid raceme; bracts scarious, 3-8 cm long; flowers resupinate, white with dark purple maroon blotch on lip, or entirely purple maroon; pedicel and ovary 7-20 mm long; tepals oblong-elliptic, 8-14x4-5 mm, petals narrower than sepals; lip 3-lobed near base, 6-12 mm long, 8-15 mm wide; side lobes asymmetrical, oblong, enclosing column, nerves and ridges papillose; mid-lobe suborbicular, with a few raised warts on veins (veins not pilose !).
Ecology : Grassland, seasonally moist grassland; dambo; wooded grassland; rocky places; sunny hillsides; on granite; stream sides; short-grassed lava plains; 1300-2530 m alt.
  Distribution disjunct: NE Argentina, Brazil (according to R. C. Forzza & P. Leitman, Catálogo de plantas e fungos do Brasil 2: 1381, 2010, subspontaneous /naturalized in N, C-W, SE, S, in cerrado, mata atlântica), ? in Uruguay-Paraguay.
