Biology : Terrestrial herb 25-70 cm tall; tubers ovoid, 1,5-4x1-2 cm; sterile shoot to 7 cm tall, 3-5-leaved, the lower 2-3 sheath-like, the upper lanceolate, 7-20x1,5-4 cm; flowering shoot glabrous, 5-9-leaved, covered by imbricated appressed sheaths 3,5-8x1-3 cm; inflorescence 6-15 cm long, loosely 7-20-flowered; flowers white, apex of spurs green, very sweetly scented (hyacinth-like); bracts ovate-lanceolate, 15-40 mm long, reflexed; ovary 10-15 mm long; sepals and petals deflexed; dorsal sepal oblong, 10-13x3 mm; laterals 10-15x2-5 mm; petals oblong, 10-13x3 mm, margins densely ciliolate; lip ellipsoid-ovoid, 10-15 mm long and wide, very convex, hooded, apical lobe reflexed, hairy inside; spurs narrowly cylindrical, 40-75 mm long, pendent.
Ecology : Wet grassland; dambo; damp and swampy areas; seepage slopes; miombo woodland; riverine forest; usually forming large colonies; 700-2700 m alt.
  “Near Ibaba [Tanzania]…hundreds of plants produce a carpet of white on the mountainside [Bundali Hills] in early February…” (Cribb & Leedal, Mount. flow. south. Tanzania.: 222, 1982). Tubers eaten in times of famine, but also used for chikanda (Bingham & al. in Veld & Flora 89: 17, 2003).
