Ecology and distribution

Biology : Terrestrial herb 20-110 cm tall; tubers ellipsoid, 1-5x0,7-2,2 cm; sterile shoot to 5 cm long, 3-4-leaved; lower 2 leaves sheath-like, upper 1-3 lanceolate-acute, 5-13x2-6 cm; flowering stem covered by 8-15 sheathing leaves, lanceolate, 2,5-11x1-3 cm; inflorescence cylindrical, 5-42x1,5-2,5 cm, many-flowered; flowers curved outwards, (yellow-) green, sometimes tinged purplish, scented; bracts lanceolate, 10-35 mm long, reflexed; ovary 5-10 mm long; tepals decurved; dorsal sepal oblanceolate, 3-6x < 1 mm; laterals elliptical, 4-7x1,5 mm, much twisted; petals oblanceolate, 3-5x0,5 mm, pubescent, ciliolate; lip ellipsoid, much hooded, 4-6x4-6 mm, fleshy, apex shortly recurved, mouth narrow; spurs 2, very slender, 10-25 mm, pendent, sometimes (very variable) with 2 short additional spurs c. 1 mm long (cf. Summerhayes in Kew Bull. 8: 577, 1954).
Ecology : Grassland, sometimes with scattered bushes, Protea, etc.; open woodland, Brachystegia and mixed woodland; bushland; dambo margins; often on sloping ground; copper steppe savanna with low copper content; 1050-2700 m alt.
