Biology : Deciduous shrub or tree 2-12 m tall; bole crooked, to 1 m or more in girth; branching candelabra-like; crown low; branches few, thick, stumpy (when leafless resembling amputated, deformed limbs); bark thick, fissured, dark (reddish) grey.

Ecology : Woodland, wooded grassland; rocks; on red acid clay, laterite; sometimes on termite mounds; forest gallery; tall grass savanna; rocky steep hillsides with Combretum, Erythrina abyssinica woodland; 200-2470 m alt.
