Trop. Afr.
Biology : Perennial or biennial succulent herb, to 90 cm high; tuberous root producing one to many stems, surrounded at base by a rosette of dense fleshy leaves usually disappearing at anthesis; stem ± stout, erect, simple, fleshy.
Ecology : Woodland, savanna; rock crevices and rocky outcrops; Zairean hyperaccumulator of cobalt: 1712 µg/g dry weight; (450-) 1500-4100m alt. S. Africa (Transvaal, Natal, Orange Free State, Cape Prov.), Swaziland, Lesotho; Arabia.
