Biology : Erect deciduous tree, 9-20 m; bole c. 45 cm Ø; bark shallowly fissured or smooth (2 cultivated varieties recognized); leaves 20-60 cm long, chartaceous, 9-25-foliolate, clustered at tips of branches.

Ecology : Native throughout S & SE Asia in forests up to 700 m alt. (also planted in forest clearings). Also cultivated in other tropical countries.
  Grown (fast growing) in orchards and gardens in (W) Africa, for its fruit (market-produce); young shoots also eaten as pot herb.
