Ecology and distribution
Trop. Afr.
Biology : Deciduous tree 5-20(-30) m; crown open, rounded or spreading; sometimes a shrub (not in E Africa) 3-4 m tall; trunk single, straight, to 30 cm Ø; bark dark grey or greyish brown, rough, fissured with ± rectangular scales; slash exuding red sap;
Ecology : Brachystegia and other deciduous woodlands, wooded grassland trees often left in areas cleared for cultivation; often on Kalahari sand; 0-1820 m alt. - One of the dominating species of savannas and woodlands. Sometimes exploited for timber.
  Variable in width of pod (6,5-13 cm Ø).
  N Namibia, Caprivi Strip, Botswana, Swaziland, NE S. Africa.
  Fruits can be confused with those of P. brenanii , but bristles lacking, and with leafy stipules.
