Herb or shrublet, mostly erect, 0,4-1 m tall, from a large underground tuber to 45 cm Ø; young stems and foliage densely appressed silvery-grey silky; older stems pale yellow-brown, ± glabrescent; flowers dark blue or mauve (rarely yellow). |

Low rainfall areas in open grassland, wooded grassland, floodplain tall grassland, on sandy soils and Kalahari sand; and in grassland with Burkea, Combretum zeyheri, Terminalia sericea, Acacia etc. |
