Biology : Shrub or small tree 1-4(-5) m tall; young stems glaucous green to dark brown, often longitudinally ribbed; older stems with greyish black cracked bark; flowers red, decorative; leaves, flowers and seeds very poisonous to livestock.
Ecology : Native to S. America, grown as an ornamental; escaped from gardens in tropical Africa, also reported as a weed of aquatic areas (Fl. Zambes.).
